Class Information

The Cheyenne-class project was approved in 2343 to counterpart the upcoming Galaxy-class and Nebula-classes. Starfleet was very interested in the saucer separation, and reintigration, capabilities of the Galaxy Class, but was not fond of the enormous resources and time that it took to construct, operate and maintain a Galaxy-class starship. Because of that, the Cheyenne-class hit the drawing boards to be a much smaller cruiser-like starship capable of saucer separation.

The Cheyenne-class, due to it's much smaller size, was the first into production and out into the field. It was a simple ship and wasn't a starship that was expected to be the most advanced starship in Starfleet. The ship performed as expected, but the Cheyenne-class played a more important role. As the first starship actually into the field with the ability to saucer separate and reintigrate without the help of a spacedock, the Cheyenne-class was essentially the test bed for the system. The engineers at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards were interested to see it's performance to evaluate any changes they'd be forced to make to the Galaxy-class.

The USS Cheyenne was able to successfully separate and reintigrate, but it wasn't a smooth operation. Problems with the structural integrity field systems between the engineering and saucer sections, and the docking clamps that physically kept the two together became quickly apparent. After a redesign of the clamping system and a total refit of the structural integrity field to be able to accomidate for separation allowed the saucer separation to become a much smoother operations. These changes were also incorporated into the Galaxy-class.

The Cheyenne went into full production in 2352 with an initial batch of six starships. The Cheyenne-class proved capable both on the frontier and in the core of the Federation serving in many different roles. The Cheyenne-class has also proved itself at the Battle of Wolf 359 and the conflict with the Borg, and most recently in the Dominion War.
