Lieutenant Commander
Lieutenant Commander is a military rank, the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations.
Use in Starfleet
Lieutenant Commanders are considered to be senior officers and are often assigned to Department head roles. Due to their vast experience Lieutenant Commanders are capable of serving in multiple roles and can even hold the role of Executive Officer on same ships. They are more the capable to fill in as a Acting Commanding Officer if required and in some cases they can command a starship in their own right.
Advancement
For Lieutenant Commanders to be eligible for a promotion to the rank of Commander they must sit and pass the Bride Officer's Test. The majority of Starfleet Officers who serve on the bridge of a starship take this test early in their careers or even during their tenure at Star Fleet Academy, so this requirement is only in effect for those officers who don't serve regularly on the bridge like the Chief Medical Officer. It is generally considered that a Lieutenant Commander will spend at least 4 years at this rank before being considered for a promotion.
